ANTIOXIDANTS & HONEY

Antioxidants are molecules that are capable of slowing down or even preventing the physical oxidation and deterioration of chemicals in the body, helping to prevent cell-damage of many kinds throughout the body.  These nutrients interact with reactive oxygen metabolites in our bodies to protect our body from disease, fight infections, heal itself and function efficiently.

Raw honey contains a variety of plant based dietary antioxidants. The amount of antioxidant activity in any particular honey is a function of the type of flowers the bees visited when foraging nectar to create the honey.  As a good rule of thumb, the darker a particular raw honey, the more nutrient rich and higher in antioxidant activity it will likely be.

Commonly found antioxidants in honey include malic, gluconic and cinnaminic acids.  For example, Vitamin C  (L-ascorbic acid) is a well known water soluable antioxidant that protects the body from oxidative stress and is vital in numerous human biological systems.  Vitamin C is naturally found in both the fruit of the orange tree and in the nectar of the orange blossom from which the fruit grows.  Consequently, Vitamin C is found naturally in high quality raw orange blossom honey, such as the  Dolce Alveare Sicilian Orange Blossom Honey in the Bee Limitless Honey Shop.

Other honeys in the Honey Shop that are notably high in antioxidant activity include Tupelo, Wilelaiki (Christmas Berry), Sunflower, and Blackberry honeys, along with the Indian Wild Forest Honey (which is particularly high in flavonoid and phenolic compounds from the unique makeup of the ne'em flower's nectar that is the source for this honey).
